A truly special exhibition: in Gallipoli, Maths meets Art

A unique event in the Gallipoli Museum: art and culture in Salento

If you are a lover of the arts and the sciences, Gallipoli is the city for you more than ever before, not just because of its architectural marvels or its perfect marriage with the sea, but also because from 14th June – 31st October you can visit an art exhibition at the Diocese Museum that will make you reflect on the geometric beauty of nature and of art.

After having tanned yourself, after lunch, maybe even in a sunny afternoon in the South, come and discover an ancient mystery. Thanks to this exhibition you can feel as if you were in the Renaissance period, when everything was a representation of perfect proportions; after this visit you can take a stroll in the park of Baia Verde and observe nature in a totally new way.

At the Diocese Museum “Mons. Vittorio Fusco” in Gallipoli, the exhibition called “Mathematics and Beauty: Fibonacci and the Golden Number” has been staged. For those who don’t know, the golden number is a proportion that is contained within every living and non living object:the galaxy is built on the golden ratio, the distance between the leaves of a tree, the distance between the face and the arms, the Greek temples, music, all of these are built on the golden ratio, and this is why it has proved so fascinating to artists and why it has also been called the divine ratio. Some people have seen in this number proof of the existence of God. Fibonacci was the mathematician who studied these “magic” numbers and who is still today considered one of the most important mathematicians in history, but Euclides had already theorised the existence of these numbers in ancient times.

The curator of the exhibition is Professor Antonino Zichichi, who, through reproductions of major works by artists like Michelangelo, Botticelli, Giotto and Leonardo Da Vinci, seeks to demonstrate the tight ink between the sphere of the senses and the sphere of reason and the intimate beauty of harmony and geometric equilibrium. The great masterpieces of art are placed in dialogue with works by contemporary artists such as Alberto Biasi, Gregorio Botta, Bruno Ceccobelli, Piero Guccione, Giacomo Manzù, Piero Pizzi Cannella and many others.

We assure you that in unravelling one of the greatest secrets of art, the golden ratio, you will never look at the world with the same eyes again: even our ocean will have a different light, and the way in which it enters dialogue with the land and with our beautiful castle, even the true sense of beauty will appear to you in the moment in which you are taking a photo.
