Festivals dedicated to new wine in Salento
Wine in Salento is one of the most loved and most famous specialty products typical in the Mediterranean. It’s not a secret that the wine is produced by harvesting, pressing and bottling in September, but it is in November that all the Salentines celebrate the opening of the first bottles. The new wine to drink, taste, comment with friends and relatives, to share together, is a great social event. Wine is so important for the local economy and for the culture that the festivals mix with religiousness, in a mixture of sacred and profane that is unique in the world.
The Saint protector of the wine is San Martino and it is November 11, according to tradition, the day in which to try the new wine. It is celebrated with a little everywhere from Gallipoli to Otranto to Leuca: Taviano, Leverano, Alliste … the streets of Salento are full of people and scents of grapes. The most famous Salento wine specialties are Negroamaro, with a red color and an intense flavor, and the Primitivo, dark, strong and decisive. Among the whites stands out the chardonnay, but there are many vines that contribute to make the Salento wines extremely fragrant and tasty, suitable for every taste.
There are 26 DOC wines recognized and the Salento IGT brand recognizes the great quality and goodness of our wines. The wineries of Salento organize at this time guided tours of the cellars and tastings: every year between 10 and 11 November several wineries participate in the national event ‘Cellars open in San Martino’. For lovers of good drink, in short, the Salento in November is a must.
